In ancient live, there lived a king named Prabu Maha Sila. The king had a very beautiful daughter. Because of her beauty, she was famous throughout the country. The kings, the crown prince, or the prince fought to get the princess.

The king was very confused when much young man came to his palace. They consisted of king, princes, crown prince, adipati, even people who had supernatural power arrived wanted to propose his daughter to determine his prospective son-in-law, Prabu Maha Sila was very careful. This considering when his choice was unfair, for who was not chosen will be disappointed and made the disorder situation. Moreover possibly the war and bloodshed could happen.

“My daughter, I won’t let it happen,” Prabu Maha said to the daughter. “Ask to Hyang Maha Agung so that you choose the right man,” said Prabu Maha Sila.

Strengthened the heart of princes Luh Candrasasi.

“Father, don’t worry about that. I will choose whoever, as long as he provide my requirement,” said princess luh candrasasi.

“What requirement?” urged Prabu Maha Sila.

“Whoever can bring the white dragon eyes and its scales, he will become my husband. Whoever his person and wherever his origin,” answered Princess Luh Candrasasi. The princess Luh Candrasasi immediately told the requirement to the applicant.

“It’s really wise!” said the applicants.

Then, they immediately competed to look for the eyes and the scale of the white dragon. They spread to every corners of the country. They entered the jungles. The mountain, the valley or the cave were passed through by them. But, not a single applicant was successful. Moreover, some applicants were lost and could not return to his home.

In the meantime, apart from the Prabu Maha Sila’s royal territory, there was a young man from the common people. His name was Manik Angkeran. He heard that in the royal palace, the daughter of the king held the contest.

“Anyone who succeeded in getting the eyes and the scale of the white dragon will be accepted as his husband.”

Manik Angkeran dreamt about meeting the princess Luh Candrasasi. In his dream, Manik Angkeran fell in love with Luh Candrasasi, so did Luh Candrasasi. Seeing the reality, Manik Angkeran immediately appeared before his master in the white dragon cave. Manik Angkeran asked for a help to his master to look for the eyes and the scale of the white dragon.

“Manik Angkeran, you have to prepare to sacrifice anything for the sake of your sweetheart, will you?” asked Manik Angkeran’s master who wore white coat. Manik Angkeran promised to sacrifice all he had, the spirit and the body.

“Good. I also dare to make a sacrifice for the sake of other person that need some help,” said Manik Angkeran’s master.

“Well, now see the real of me,” said Manik Angkeran’s master. Suddenly, the master’s body changed into a white dragon.

Manik Angkeran was really shocked to see this.

“This is my original shape actually. A white dragon. Because of my serious prayer, I am allowed by god to change my body into humankind. And I must be willing to give the help to whoever need help. Moreover, with you as the pupil that I really love,” said Manik Angkeran’s master that has changed the shape became a white dragon.

The white dragon immediately pried up his two eyes by himself and shook his body hard, so as the scales on his body fell into the ground.

“Now, please receive my two eyes and ten slivers of the scale of my body. And give those immediately to your sweetheart luh candrasasi,” said white dragon.

“And remember my words, if in the future you will have the male child, give him a name “Naga Rangsang”.
Whereas, if it is a daughter, it is up to you to give her name. and now it’s time for me to see Hyang Maha Agung.

After saying this, the white dragon was disappeared. With the sad feeling, Manik Angkeran immediately took two eyes and ten scales of the white dragon. Then, he hurried to appear before Princess Luh Candrasasi.

After arriving in the palace, Manik Angkeran handed over two eyeballs and the scale of the white dragon. Of course, Princess Luh Candrasasi was happy. She had seen the person who filled the requirement that was determined. Then, not so long afterwards princess Luh Candrasasi married Manik Angkeran. Prabu Maha Sila was really relieving.

But, Manik Angkeran was sad. He often felt hopeless.

“My dear husband, why do you look sad? Anything you are thinking of?” urged Princess Luh Candrasasi.

“There’s something you have to know, my wife. In fact, my age was very short. When the sun begins to set, I must leave this world,” revealed Manik Angkeran sadly.

It can’t be described how the pain that was experienced by Luh Candrasasi. Suddenly he fainted and his soul left his body.

At the time, Luh Candrasasi saw his husband’s soul was lifted by god; the soul of Luh Candrasasi immediately pursued him.

“It is not the time for you to die?! You will die if you gave birth a son,” the God said.

“No! I want to follow my husband! “Answered the soul of Luh Candrasasi.

“I am not possible to give birth to a son, if my husband dies now. Then please give my husband back, let him to return to the world. I do not want to be apart from my husband,” said the soul of Luh Candrasasi. Hearing the request of Luh Candrasasi’s soul, god immediately granted her request.

In fact, god only tested Luh Candrasasi’s loyalty against Manik Angkeran that came from the common people. God immediately wiped off the forehead of the two souls. A miracle happened. Manik Angkeran and Luh Candrasasi’s body moved and rose slowly. They lived again. The husband and wife lived happily ever after.

The Legend of Lake Toba

Once upon a time, there was a young man named Toba. He lived alone and had no wife. He decided being single and didn’t get married, although his age was mature enough to a family.

He had a narrow farm and a small hut not far from a lake. If the day was getting dark, he would go to the lake for fishing. He liked fishing and he could do this activity until night has come.

One day, after worked on his small farm, he decided to go fishing. He wanted to look for some fish for his dinner. He waited for a long time, but his hook didn’t catch any fish. He waited and waited patiently.

Suddenly, his fish bait made some movement. He was sure he would get a fish for his dinner. And that was true, a pretty big fish stuck on his bait. He took the fish and then put it on a fish basket. Then, he went home.
He was so happy to get a fish for his dinner. He imagined that his dinner tonight would be nice because the fish was pretty big and fresh.

Arriving at home, he put his fish basket beside the fire place. And then, he set fire of the fire place. But, he realized that he forgot to look for some woods for his fire place. Without the woods, of course he couldn’t cook the fish for his dinner.

He went out to look for some woods. He left the fish in the kitchen. He didn’t worry about the fish because he was sure that the fish was safe in the place.

After getting some woods, he went back home, but, he was to surprised as the fish basket was empty. The fish was gone, he just found some scales which in the form of gold pieces. Toba was confused. He convinced himself that the gold pieces he hold was the scales of the fish he caught this afternoon.

He stepped to his room. But, again he was shocked as he saw a beautiful girl with long hair in his room. The girl sat in toba’s bed. Toba didn’t make any movement. He was so shock and wondered who the girl was.

Suddenly the girl turn her head and looked at toba. Toba was so amazed with the girl’s beauty. He looked at the girl and admired her beauty. For some moments, they looked each other. Was that a possibility that this beautiful girl is an angel? toba thought.

Toba was so speechless and couldn’t say anything. For breaking the ice, the girl said something. She approached toba and said.

“Hi, toba. It was getting dark, could you turn on the lamp” the girl asked.

“Ooo… hhhiii… Alright, I will turn the lamp on,” Toba said, his body was trmebled because of fear.

“Don’t be afraid, Toba. I will not hurt you,” said the girl.

“But, who are you ? are you kind of genie or something ?”

The girl smiled and said.

“I am the incarnation of the fish you caught this afternoon,” the girl answered.

“Really, Oh.. God. Is that true?” toba was so surprised.

“Yes, but you don’t have to be afraid. I will help you to do some house hold activity. I will cook for you and prepare your daily meal, ”  the girl offered.

Toba was so happy to hear that.

“By the way, the gold pieces is my scales,” the girl said.

“Ooo.. well.. that’s why I didn’t found my fish in the basket,” toba said.

And then the girl went to the kitchen and cooked dinner for toba.

Everyday toba was accompanied by the girl. Toba was happy for that. Until one day, he asked the girl to get married. But, the girl gave a requiretmen. 

“I am agree to be your wife, but don’t ever tell my secret, my condition that I was a fish,” said the girl.

Toba agreed the girl’s requiretmen. And then they got married. Toba was happy to have such a beautiful wife. They lived happily because they loved each other.

Years gone by. Toba’s wife was pregnant and then not so long after that she gave birth. Toba was so happy. The baby was a boy. Named Samosir. They took care their only child. They showered the boy with love. It seemed that they were happy family.

7 years later

The mother spoiled the boy too much. No wonder, samosir became spoiled child. He didn’t want to help his father to work on farm. He only stayed at home doing nothing. He was a very lazy boy.

One day the mother asked samosir to bring lunch for his father who worked in a farm. Usually the mother did his job. But, because she was very busy, she didn’t have time to bring the lunch for his husband.

“Samosir my dear, please take this lunch for your father in the farm. He must be very hungry now. I can’t bring it for him, there is something else I want to do!” asked the mother.

“No, I can’t!” samosir refused.

“Why, don’t you want ho help me?” asked the mother.

“I want to play with my frieds, mother!” said samosir.

Mother was angry to hear this. She was so upset and threatened samosir if he didn’t do what she’s asked. She wouldn’t give samosir lunch. 

Because of his mother’s anger, he felt forced to do what his mother’s request.

“All right, mom. I will bring it to my father,” samosir said. Samosir went to his father’s farm. But he grumbled continuosly as she wanted to play with his friends.

On the way to his father’s farm, he ate the lunch little by little. He felt hungry, too. Because of this, there’s just a little lunch left. Meanwhile, the day was getting hot. Toba decided to rest under the tree. He felt thirsty and hungry. He asked himself why his wife didn’t bring lunch for him.

Waiting in a hungry was such a terrible thing for Toba. He got angry that time. Finally he saw somebody in a distance. He hoped the somebody was his wife who brought lunch for him.

But, he was surprised to see samosir, his son, who came to the farm.

“What do you do here, my son. Where is your mother? Why she didn’t  bring my lunch?” Toba said angrily.

“Mother is busy to do other things. So, she asked me to bring this lunch for you” said Samosir while gave the lunch to his father.

Toba took the lunch quickly as he couldn’t bear his hunger anymore. But, when he saw the lunch box, he was surprised. The lunch was no more left.

“What? Where is the lunch ? Why this box is empty ?” Toba said angrily.

“I am sorry, father. On the way here, I ate your lunch little by little. I am so hungry.” Samosir answered with anxiety.

“You’re really a bad boy. Why are you doing this ? I am really hungry, you know ? ” Toba snapped at Samosir.

“I am sorry, dad. I am really sorry for that!” Samosir said apologize.

“You are rebellious child. You are lazy, useless!!!” Toba got angry.

He felt really upset whit his son. And, suddenly he said something rude that actually was forbidden.

“Your manner is like a little animal. It is because your mother spoiled you. You are so naughty. Well, it is because your mother is a fish. So you are like her. Go away from here” Toba didn’t realize that what he said was so rude. He was forbidden to tell about Samosir’s mother’s origin.

Samosir was so sad to hear what his father’s said. He was badly hurt. He cried continuosly. His mother asked why Samosir cried. Samosir said that his father was angry to him. It’s because he ate his father’s lunch. Samosir also told what his father had said to him.
“Father said that I was a little animal because I didn’t obey his advice and he also said that mother is a fish.”
Samosir said this to his mother.

“What ??? How excessive he is! He was not supposed to tell that to you. You are his son. I will tell him.” The beautiful girl was so angry. 

“Why he’s so rude to his own child. He promised that he wouldn’t tell my origin. Why he did this to me.” The beautiful girl said sadly.

“Calm down, Samosir. Don’t cry anymore. Now, all you have to do is climb the highest tree and stay there. There will be a huge flood and this velley will be sink and disappear. There will be great disaster here,” the beautiful girl said.

“Really, mother ! How do you know ?” Samosir asked.

“Well, you must obey my advice without complaining ” the beautiful girl told his son.

After that, Samosir went away and climbed the highest tree in the village. He stayed there, obeyed his mother’s instruction. He still didn’t know why his mother told him to do this. He just waited what happened next.

The beautiful girl was really sad. He thought that Toba didn’t love her anymore. Toba was changed. He broke his promise to her. So, the girl thought there was no use she lived. She decided to do suicide by jumping to a lake.

Suddenly, the sky was getting dark upon the valley. Not so long after that, the rain poured the earth. It was a huge rain. The thunder and the lightning were so scary.

The rain was so heavy and make a huge flood. The valley was like  a sea. Just as the girl said, there was a great disaster in that village.

Meanwhile, Toba, who was still in his farm shocked with this disaster. He couldn’t save himself. He was drown by the flood and finally died.

And, the spoiled child, Samosir, although he climbed the highest tree, he still couldn’t save himself from this great disaster. He died as his parents. His body was floating. And then baceme small island which now was called Samosir Island.

And, the village was sink and became a huge lake. This lake was named as Toba’s name, that is Lake Toba.

Tangkuban Perahu

Once upon a time, there was a beatiful lady named Dayang Sumbi who had a boy named Sangkuriang. When Sangkuriang was old enough to hunt, he was asked to hunt  with Tumang which actually his father who transformed to be a dog.

“Mom, I will give a deer’s liver to you” promised Sangkuriang.
 “Huff…. Hufff” barked Tumang.
 

Sangkuriang and Tumang started to hunt a deer. After hunting all day with empty-handed, Sangkuriang worried. Thinking shortly, he took his arrow and shot Tumang and took the liver, then went home.
 

At home sangkuriang gave the liver to his Mom. But dayang Sumbi relized that it was not deer’s liver but dog’s liver, Tumang. She was angry and she hit Sangkuriang by a spoon. She sent her son away with a big wound on his head.
 

Then Sangkuriang travelled around the world till he arrived back to his village without recognized it. In there he met a beautiful lady who actually his mother.
 

Sangkuriang and the beautiful lady fallen in love each other and decided to marry. But leter Dayang Sumbi realized that the man who she loved was her son. And then Dayang Sumbi asked him two things.

“if you want to marry me, please make a big lake and a boat in one night” request Dayang Sumbi.

“OK, If you want them” Sangkuriang agreed.
 

Then he built a lake by dammed Citarum river and made a boat. Worried Sangkuriang will finish them all,Dayang Sumbi prayed to the God. Then eastern horizon lit up and the morning came.
 

Thought his effort was useless. Angrily, he kicked the boat so it up-side down. Then the boat become a mountain which well known as Tangkuban Perahu mountain. Tangkuban means up-side down and Perahu means boat.

Legend of Loro Jonggrang

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom named Prambanan. The people lived peacefully. However, soon their happy lives were disturbed by Pengging Kingdom. The king, Bandung Bondowoso, wanted to occupy Prambanan. He was a mean king.

The war between Prambanan and Pengging could not be avoided. Prambanan lost the war and led by the new king, Bandung Bondowoso. Pengging could win the war because Bandung Bondongwoso had a supernatural power.Tentang penulis

His soldiers were not only humans but also genies. Those creatures always obeyed Bandung Bondowoso. They always did whatever Bandung Bondowoso asked them to do. The king of Prambanan had a beautiful daughter. Her name was Loro Jonggrang (Rara Jonggrang). Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry her.

"If you want to marry me, you have to build a thousand of temples in just one night," said Loro Jonggrang.

She hated Bandung Bondowoso because he made the people of Prambanan suffered.

"What? Impossible! You just gave me an excuse for not marrying me!" said Bandung Bondowoso. But he did not give up. He asked the genies to help him.

Then all those genies worked hard to build the 1.000 temples. Meanwhile, Loro Jonggrang heard from the lady-inwaiting that the building of 1.000 temples was almost finished.

She was so scared; she did not want to marry Bandung Bondowoso. And then she had a great idea. She asked all the ladies-inwaiting to help her.

"Please prepare a lot of straw and mortar. Come on! Hurry up!" said Loro Jonggrang.

All those ladies-in-waiting were confused. They did not know why Loro Jonggrang asked them to prepare a lot of straw and mortars in the middle of the night.

"Listen, all those genies are building the temples, right? We have to stop them by burning the straw and make some noise by pounding the mortar. The genies will think that sun is going to rise and they will run away. Genies are afraid of sunlight."

It worked! All those genies thought that sun rose. They did not know the light was from the fire that burning the straw. And the noise from pounding the mortar was like the start of a new day.

Bandung Bondowoso was angry. He knew Loro Jonggrang just tricked him.

"You cannot fool me, Loro Jonggrang. I already have 999 temples. I just need one more temple. Now, I will make you the one-thousandth temple."

With his supernatural power, Bandung Bondowoso made Loro Jonggrang a temple. Until now, the temple is still standing in Prambanan area, Central Java. And the temple is named Loro Jonggrang

 CINDELARAS

Once upon time on jenggala kingdom there was a king whose name Raden Putra. he had a beautiful queen and concubine, the concubine was jealous with the queen so she planned to make the queen leave the palace. The concubine  asked the royal healer to help her .   One day, the concubine pretended to be ill. Raden Putra called the royal healer to treat her. “What is her disease?” Raden Putra asked. “I’m sorry, My Majesty. She is sick because the queen put poison in her meal,” the royal healer lied.

Raden Putra was angry. He asked the queen about the story, she denied but Raden Putra won’t  listen. “Please Your Majesty, have mercy. I didn’t do anything,” cried the queen He didn’t know that the queen was pregnant. Raden Putra called one of his general to do the punishment, but he didn’t have the  heart to kill her. He built a simple house in the woods for her

Several months later, she gave birth to a  baby boy. Whose named Cindelaras. He grew up as a nice boy.  One day, while Cindelaras helped her mother to collect fire woods, he found an egg. Cindelaras brought it to go home. The egg hatched into a chick and then became a rooster wich could sing , “My master is Cindelaras. And his house is in the woods. He’s the son of Raden Putra.” 

Cindelaras always woke up early in the morning and listen to his song. He though “Who is Raden Putra?” The queen then told him the whole story. Cindelaras decided to go to the palace to meet and to tell the king  what really happened.

On his way, he met some people who were involved in cockfighting. They challenge him to see how strong his rooster was. Cindelaras accepted it . He roosters won again and again.

The news spread quickly to  Jenggala kingdom and made Raden Putra curious. So, he invited Cindelaras to the palace. “What is your name, boy?” Raden Putra asked. “My name is Cindelaras, My Majesty,” Cindelaras answered. He was happy to see Raden Putra. 

Raden Putra challenged Cindelaras with one condition. If Raden Putra’s rooster won, Cindelaras’ head would be cut off. Then  if Cindelaras’ rooster won, Raden Putra would share half of his wealth. Cindelaras accepted it. The competition was held in the front yard of the palace. In a few minutes, Cindelaras’ rooster won . Raden Putra woke up from his seat, “That rooster is no ordinary rooster, and  he’s no ordinary boy too. Who is he?” .Suddenly Cindelaras’ rooster sang the song, “My master is Cindelaras.and  His house is in the woods. He’s the son of Raden Putra.” 

Raden Putra was surprised. “Is it true?” he asked. “Yes, My Majesty. My name is Cindelaras and my mother was the queen,” said Cindelaras. He immediately went to the woods to pick up the queen. The concubine and the royal healer got a punishment because they are lied. Ever since, Cindelaras and his parents lived happily together.

Moral value:we must get something in the right way

Malin Kundang

Once upon a time, on the north coast of Sumatra lived a poor woman and his son. The boy was called as Malin Kundang. However, as they were only fisherman’s helper, they still lived in poverty.

“Mother, what if I sail overseas? if I stay here, I’ll always be a poor man. I want to be a successful person,” said Malin kundang to his mother.

His mother wiped her tears, “If you really want to go, I can’t stop you. I could only pray to God for you to gain success in life. But, promise me, you’ll come home.”

In the next morning, Malin Kundang was ready to go.

“Ok mom I will go now… Please pray for me mom… See you mom… Bye…Bye…”

“Ok Malin… Please take care of yourself. I will always pray for you my son… Good bye…”

One day, Malin kundang met a beautiful girl. She was the daughter of his master. They fell in love each other and got married.

After several years waiting without any news, Malin Kundang’s mother was suddenly surprised by the arrival of a big ship in the pier.

“Waw… What a big & luxury ship…? Whose ship is that?”

When the ship finally pulled over, Malin Kundang’s mother saw a man who looked wealthy stepping down a ladder along with a beautiful woman.

Her blurry eyes still easily recognized him. The man was Malin Kundang, her son.

Do you think Malin Kundang will recognize her mother?

Malin Kundang’s mother quickly went to see her beloved son.

“Malin, you’re back, son!” said Malin Kundang's mother

But, Malin Kundang didn’t show any respond. He was ashamed to recognize his own mother in front of his beautiful wife.

“You’re not my Mother. I don’t know you. My mother would never wear such ragged and ugly clothes,” said Malin Kundang.

“Malin… Don’t you  recognize me? I’m your mother!” she said sadly.

Malin Kundang’s face was as cold as ice and he said.

“Guard, take this old woman out of here,and give her some money so she won’t disturb me again!”

”Malin… my son. Why do you treat your own mother like this?”

"Go! And never once in a while you're annoying me and my wife," he shouted as he drove her mother .

“Supercharge you Malin! I am your mother .. but why do not you recognize me?! You are really an ungrateful child ..Oh my God! If he is really my son,Curse him into a stone ...!" she said, cryingly

Suddenly, malin kundang’s whole body turned into stone. He was punished for not admitting his own mother.
